Local Clubs benefit from Co-op fund

November 23, 2019

Three local groups have been awarded more than £5,000 each from the Co-op's Community Fund.

'

St Mary's Theatre Club received a cheque for £5,868 at the store on Saturday morning. It was presented to the Club's Chair Linda Thomas, Secretary Jenny Byers and Treasurer Gail Sibley.

The money will support the Club's efforts to restore the stage area of the Town Hall and "make the Hall a thriving community hub through improved facilities".

Linda said: "On behalf of St Mary's Theatre Club we are absolutely delighted to accept this fantastic cheque for £5,868, far more than we ever could have hoped for.

"I would like to thank all the Co-op members who chose us for their Community Fund and the Co-op for setting up this scheme to support local causes.

"A huge thanks must also go to Jenny Byers, who works tirelessly to raise money for the Theatre Club and who put our name forward to be considered for this."

She added: "The money will be used for our 'Stage a Comeback' (We have a long shopping list, curtains, lights, staging, etc etc) once we find a suitable base to perform in and call home. Thank you so much."

Isles of Scilly Judo Club also received a cheque for £5,598 and St Martin's Observatory was given £5,112.

COSMOS Secretary Charlie Payne said: "I’m sorry I couldn’t make it over on behalf of COSMOS. The entire team is so grateful for all the support we’ve received from the community. You’re amazing. Congratulations to both the other groups and huge thanks again to Co-op."

Co-op's Local Community Fund receives 1% of money spent by members on own brand products and services. This, along with funds raised from carrier bag sales, is used to support projects benefiting the local community.

Local groups can apply to be one of the Co-op's causes, after which members can vote for their preferred choice via their membership cards. Money each shopper raises will go to the group they personally specified for the next six or 12 months.
