Toiletries scheme gets funding boost

May 28, 2019

A scheme to collect unwanted toiletries from the islands and donate them to vulnerable women has had a boost from the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s Community Fund.

The company has offered to transport the items from St Mary’s to Penzance, where they will go to homeless shelters and women’s refuges in Cornwall.

Sue Major, who is behind the project along with the Inner Wheel group, has called for donations of everything from shampoo and sanitary products to toothpaste and sun cream.

She told Radio Scilly: “Imagine you’re suddenly living on the street and you haven’t got anything so you’ve got no soap, no comb, no deodorant, no sanitary products, no shampoo. You haven’t got anything. This just gives you a little bit of dignity and something that actually makes your life just a little bit nicer.

"So it’s anything like that. Even the little sachets you pick up as free samples of shampoo. I just pop them into a box and now, thank goodness, because of the Steamship Group, we can get things over to the mainland and I have a link who will distribute them to Cornwall Women’s Services.“

Toiletries are being collected at the charity shop on St Mary’s, which is open on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, and at the Steamship Group office in Hugh Town. All products donated should be new and unopened.

A milestone £50,000 has been donated to local groups and good causes over the past three years by the Community Fund, which was launched in 2016.

The current round of funding closes on June 14th. Full details, eligibility criteria and application forms are now available from the Steamship Group’s website
