Police advise islanders to remove car keys

Police on the Isles of Scilly have advised islanders against leaving their keys in parked cars after a third vehicle was taken without consent in as many months.

A vehicle was taken from outside Park House between 12.50am and 1.05am on Wednesday May 8th. It was then driven to Pungies Lane, where it was abandoned.

All the vehicles taken in recent months had their keys in the ignition.

Sgt Darren White said: "I would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that if a vehicle is stolen or taken without consent where keys were left inside and it is subsequently damaged or destroyed, their respective insurer may void their claim as a result.

"Of the three vehicles taken in recent months, one of them was proven to have been driven whilst under the influence of alcohol. I strongly suspect the most recent incident was likely the same."

He added: "Whilst we have very low crime rates on the Isles of Scilly, acts of stupidity in a drunken state can and do happen so the simple act of removing vehicle keys may negate serious injury or worse, not to mention the personal financial penalties already mentioned."

If anyone has information relating to the vehicle taken on Wednesday May 8th please contact police on 101 quoting crime reference CR/040329/19 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
