Island Haven project starts fundraising drive
The Island Haven will start its official fundraising during the World Pilot Gig Championships from today.
The ambitious project aims to provide accommodation in Truro for islanders and their supporters while they receive medical treatment on the mainland.
Islanders needing mainland care currently have to find their own accommodation, sometimes for prolonged periods and often at a great cost. Family, friends or carers may also need a place to stay to accompany them.
Tim Guthrie, chairman of the group behind the project, told Radio Scilly they hope to create a base similar to The Lodge near Derriford hospital in Plymouth.
“We want to give people their own homely space. Many people don’t want to feel they have to go into a B&B and have to interact with other people. There will be a comfortable space, a bed, we’re hoping it will have all sorts of modern facilities… it will be as comfortable as we can possibly make it as a home from home.
“We’re very lucky really, we’ve been allocated a piece of land on the campus at Treliske and we’re now talking to architects in terms of getting people to help us to design the best possible facility.”
Tim thanked Tresco Island for paying for the collection jars and leaflets and said the project now need locals to get on board and help with fundraising.
“You’ll see people out with Island Haven collecting buckets and jars. Please go and talk to them and they’ll fill you in on the reasons behind the project. Every penny is a penny less than we need to build this project, which is very much needed.”
Ro Bennett and Ann Davis from St Mary’s are already signed up as volunteers. They said: "We have so many ideas to raise money for this exciting project. If you are looking for a charity to fundraise for, we hope you’ll support this one.”
