A record 170 gigs are expected to take part in the 30th annual World Pilot Gig Championships this weekend.

The figure is up 20 on last year's number, itself a record for the event.

However, the number of gigs will be restricted to 120 from next year, plus the Isles of Scilly gigs.

WPGC committee chairman Kevin Sherris told The Cornishman that all the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA)–registered gigs would get an invitation, as well as the international gig clubs. Private gigs will get an invite, while the top dozen men and ladies of 2019 will automatically go through. There will also be some 20 wildcard places.

He also revealed that initial plans to hold the 30th anniversary presentation ceremony at the Garrison playing field - along with a band, bar and food - had to be scrapped due to health and safety issues.

Six mainland police officers are scheduled to be on hand to cover the event.

The CPGA's heritage project will be on display in the Town Hall over the weekend.

Pulling Together the Past aims to create a digital archive to record irreplaceable historical data on pilot gig rowing for future generations.
