The Community Observatory on St Martins will be 'officially' opened tomorrow (Tuesday April 30th) by the man who inspired it all.
Mark Holmes is a regular visitor to the islands who set up an Observatory in his home village in Cheshire. While staying with Valerie Thomas on St Martins several years ago, he suggested that Scilly should capitalise on its Dark Sky status to attract tourists for out of season Astro Holidays.
Val seized on the idea and the plan for the islands’ own Observatory was born.
Mark will give a talk at 7.30pm tomorrow about ‘Werewolves, dragons and other lunatic ideas: Earth’s relationship with the Moon’, as well as what we can see in the sky in May.
Afterwards attendees are invited to share a celebratory glass of bubbly with members of COSMOS, the group behind the Observatory.
Details of all the goings-on at the Observatory can be found at the COSMOS website at cosmosscilly.co.uk or in its Facebook group.
