Time running out to enter One Act Play Festival

Time is running out to enter the eighth annual One Act Play festival.

The evening of drama takes place at the Church Hall on St Mary’s on May 12th as part of the inaugural Creative Scilly event.

The closing date for entries is this Sunday, April 21st.

One Act Plays written by islanders are performed as rehearsed readings by St Mary’s Theatre Club members, with visiting writer and broadcaster Paul Dodgson on hand to give feedback. The audience is asked to vote for their favourite and the winner receives the Shirley Smith Trophy.

Club secretary Jenny Byers said: “Over the last few years we have seen some great writing, some quirky plays, we have presented some of the winning plays for our summer productions and fundraising events, and we have spawned a few pantos as well. So something very positive and worthwhile has come from very small beginnings 8 years ago.

“We also have a very good friend in Paul Dodgson, who has taken days out of his busy life to support our endeavours.”

As well as the One Act Play Festival, St Mary's Theatre Club will perform a murder-mystery production at restaurant On The Quay during Creative Scilly.

Kate Rhodes, who wrote Scilly-set thrillers Hell Bay and Ruin Beach, penned the play for the Club to perform for charity and it will also be staged through the season as their 2019 summer play.

The murder-mystery version of A Scilly Mystery takes place at On The Quay at 8pm on Saturday May 18th.
