Ex-resident accused of Scilly frauds, theft

A former St Mary's resident was due to appear before magistrates on Monday (April 8th) accused of fraud and theft against two islands businesses.

Mary-Jane Allan, 51, failed to attend Truro Magistrates' Court to face three charges relating to her time working for the Scillonian Club on St Mary's and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group.

She is accused of stealing an HP laptop worth £379.98 belonging to the Scillonian Club between August 14th and September 4th 2018.

Allan, of 12 Malvern Close, Warminster, also faces two charges of committing fraud - the first that 'you dishonestly failed to disclose to the Scillonian Club information, namely that you were not correctly banking cash subscriptions and a cheque, which you were under a legal duty to disclose, intending, by that failure, to make a gain, namely £3,566.48, for yourself'. The charge relates to the dates April 19th 2017 - August 20th 2018.

The second fraud charge, relating to the period March 1st - August 24th 2018, likewise accuses Allan of dishonestly failing to disclose information to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group that she was not correctly banking cash payments, which she was under a legal duty to disclose, intending to make a gain of £3,397.20 for herself.

The case was adjourned until April 29th 2019 at noon.
