Scilly students triumph at Cornwall Music Festival

Isles of Scilly pupils have once more triumphed at the Cornwall Music Festival.

A total of 11 students from Five Islands Academy aged between 9 and 14 attended the annual event at Truro Methodist Church, which features adults and young people from around the county competing in solo and group classes.

Despite being a younger more inexperienced group this year, they came home with five trophies and finished second or third in all other classes.

Woodwind teacher Jane Pender said: "Both adjudicators were extremely impressed with our students and both took the time to come and talk to me about the amazing instrumental music and work going on in our school."

Libby Shave was one of the stars of the trip, winning Grades 5&6 woodwind class on flute and Grade 5&6 Saxophone class on Alto Sax. She also finished second in the Grade 3&4 woodwind on Clarinet.

Jamie Carrier (1st) and Sienna Hathway (3rd) took the other two top three spots in the Grade 3&4 woodwind class, while Libby also finished second with a distinction in the 3-9 players instrumental ensemble as part of a flute quartet with Sienna Hathway, Ruby May and Maddie Blackwell.

Meanwhile, Arlo Garratt finished first and Izzy Williams third in the Grade 1&2 woodwind solo class, and the pair together won the up to and including Grade 4 Duet class. Arlo also finished third with Maddie.

Isabella Hobbs finished second in the Grade 1&2 Saxophone class. Five Islands Academy students also finished in third place in the 10+players instrumental ensemble class and the 3-9 players recorder ensemble class, as well as second place (Libby and Sienna) and third place (Ruby and Sienna) in the Grade 5 and above Duet class.
