Work complete on Penzance passenger shelter

Work has completed on the the long-awaited covered walkway for Scillonian passengers on Penzance Quay.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group contracted ARC Structures to design, manufacture and install a covered fabric walkway to help improve the passenger experience for those travelling on the ferry.

The walkway area covers over 50m in length and the design has had to overcome several challenges presented by the location, such as "extreme and changeable weather conditions, site design changes and strict timescales restraints".

Arc Structures Managing Director Andy Chiverton said: “I was lucky enough to call the Isles of Scilly home as a child and return to the islands regularly with my family. It’s great to be a part of a project that will improve the traveller experience to the islands.”

The walkway is based on a removable galvanised steel structure with a tensioned fabric canopy roof. The structure can be taken down in the event of bad weather or as the sailing season ends.

Stuart Reid, Managing Director of Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, said: “The long-awaited structure will vastly improve the travelling experience for passengers to the islands, providing them with comfort and protecting them from the elements as they wait to travel.”
