Scilly pupils join global climate change protest
Students from the Isles of Scilly gave rousing voice to their fears for the future on Friday as they joined a global protest calling for more action on climate change.
Around 150 pupils from Five Islands Academy joined youngsters in more than 120 countries by skipping school to demand politicians take action.
The children marched from the school to the Town Hall on St Mary's, loudly chanting and waving placards with slogans such as “Science over Silence” and “There is no Planet B”.
Upon arrival at the Town Hall, pupils Aidan Smith and Mila Spence presented Council chairman Robert Francis with a petition calling for change in the way Members tackle climate change, with four demands written by the UK Student Climate Network.
Cllr Francis told the marchers: “The Council will take your petition to Central Government because we also believe the issue you have raised is hugely important, not only just here in Scilly but around the world.”
He thanked the students for making Members focus on climate change, telling them: “This day is about you. It’s about your future.”
