New Golf Club Stewards ready for launch

March 1, 2019

The new Stewards of the Isles of Scilly Golf Club will welcome visitors at their official opening night tonight.

John Bird and Sarah Twynham take over the Isles of Scilly Clubhouse & Bistro from today following the departure of previous incumbents Pete and Tania Reynolds last August.

The couple thanked the Club committee for their "overwhelming support" and told This is Scilly that they are both excited and nervous about launch night.

John said: "We're both going to be front of house welcoming people. It’s a big day for us and we’ve just had the kitchen deep cleaned by R&M Cleaners - I’ll give them a plug because they’ve done an incredible job. But we haven’t been able to use anything in there and we thought it would be too ambitious to try to do food on the first night.

"By the response we’ve got, which has been quite overwhelming by local people, I think we’re going to be busy in the bar, so we both want to be front of house, hopefully smiling, not fast asleep because we’re shattered. Just welcoming people in here."

On why they decided to apply for the post, John said that they "ummed and ahhed about it for a long time".

"There were various reasons we decided not to do it and then we suddenly made a fast decision on January 2nd and decided we were being fools to miss the opportunity to take on doing something that suits both of us.

"In some ways it’s a huge change in our lives and in other ways not so much because Sarah's been in catering since college and I’ve worked and spent a lot of time in pubs so it’ll be nice to be on the other side of the bar and running the show. The fact that we’ve been on the islands a long time, both of us 30 years, means we know lots of people and we think we can draw lots of people up here."

Both members and non-members are welcome at the Club from 6pm tonight to talk to the new Stewards, and enjoy a drink and nibbles.
