High winds forecast for tonight, Friday

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for tonight (February 6th), with potential for very strong winds.

The alert applies to the period from 10pm until 9am tomorrow, with gusts of up to 70mph predicted.

The Met Office said: "It will become very wet and very windy tonight with gales for many, and possibly severe gales for a time around the coast."

The strong winds will continue into Thursday, easing through the morning. However, 'scattered blustery showers' are forecast, with possible hail and thunder.

A yellow warning has also been issued for noon on Friday until 6pm on Saturday.

The Met Office said: "Turning very windy with rain on Friday. Strong winds lasting into Saturday, but brighter with scattered blustery showers. Winds easing briefly, but another wet and windy spell possible on Sunday.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible. It’s possible that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities could be affected by spray and/or large waves."

Previous high winds on January 26th resulted in Church Street being closed briefly due to concerns about scaffolding at Springfield Court. There was also damage to four PV panels at the airport solar garden, which were subsequently repaired.
