Cornwall, Scilly 'among biggest losers of EU funds'

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will be one of the biggest losers of EU funding after Brexit, according to new analysis.

Cornwall & Scilly and West Wales & the Welsh Valleys are classed as ‘less developed regions’, and currently receive most of the UK’s regional funding.

Along with three other regions, they were in line to receive EU support in excess of €500 or £440 per capita per year over the next six years.

The UK would have gained £11.4 billion in regional funding from the EU between 2020 and 2026, according to the study by the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), a network of 160 coastal regions in 25 European countries.

The sum is an increase of 22% on the €10.6bn received between 2014 and 2020, largely due to the fact that many UK areas are falling behind the EU average in regional prosperity.

CPMR members include Cornwall Council, the Welsh Government, several local authorities in Scotland, and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.

The Isles of Scilly Pharmacy recently revealed that it may issue special 'Brexit' prescriptions in the New Year in case the UK leaves the EU without a deal.
