New Isles of Scilly App to launch in spring
A major new app for the Isles of Scilly is to launch next year.
The Scilly App, which is in the later stages of development, is designed to be "a one stop shop for all the latest information on the islands".
It is the brainchild of Clifford Freeman, who owns St Mary's Hall Hotel, The Beach, Scilly Linen and Scilly Self-Catering.
A website has launched to showcase some of the features of the app and to enable businesses to register their interest in being included. It can be found at https://scillyapp.com.
Clifford said of the new venture: "Over the last nearly ten years of being in business on Scilly it has become apparent to me that there is a need for a more comprehensive method of providing visitors with up to date information that they can use to plan their visit and during their stay on Scilly. Because of this we have, with the help of some voucher funding, created 'The Scilly App'.
"The app is designed to promote the islands to an increasingly digitally aware visitor and help them to get the best out of their stay on Scilly. It will be a one stop shop for all the latest information on the islands. The app will display listings for shops, restaurants, activities, boat times, services, local news, tides and weather.
It will also feature a live map with a 'near me' function that will help visitors to navigate to places of interest and businesses that they are close to at that time, as well as a favourites button where they can ‘bookmark’ places they would like to visit."
Alongside match funding from the Isles of Scilly Voucher Scheme, Clifford said it has it required "a considerable investment" and will not be a "money-making enterprise".
"The aim is to make the app self-sustaining. In order to maintain the app and to ensure it is kept up to date as the season proceeds a listings fee for businesses is required. In order to make this a success for the Isles of Scilly it will be essential for the business community to get behind the project and support it."
