Friends of Isles of Scilly Transport have reiterated support of a campaign to keep the Appledore shipyard open by building a "much-needed" new ferry for Scilly.
The community group was responding to last week's statement from Trade Unions GMB and Unite calling on the Attorney General to offer an interest free loan to the group behind plans for a new vessel.
A design for a new ship was completed for the 2011 Route Partnership project. Frist said it "can be adapted and modernised but an early contract could be placed to build the basic hull".
The group said in a new press release: "FRIST urges all parties, including the Isles of Scilly Transport Board and Council, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group and Cornwall Council along with Derek Thomas MP for Scilly, to support the initiative of the GMB and Unite Trades Unions and meet with Nusrat Ghani MP, Shipping Minister and Richard Harrington MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for Business and Industry, to develop a solution to keep the Appledore Yard working and provide a new ship to replace the 41 year old Scillonian III."
Scilly's MP Derek Thomas told Radio Scilly that he has been "engaged on the idea for some time".
