School warns parents of 'Momo' danger

Five Islands School has written to parents of Year 4 and 5 pupils warning them of the danger of an online fad called the 'Momo Challenge'.

Pupils in the Luggers class, who are aged between 8 and 10, have been expressing interest in the viral game, in which a fictional horror character called Momo challenges them via WhatsApp to perform a series of increasingly dangerous tasks.

Young people from around the world have ended up taking their own lives after being instructed by Momo to do so.

Dear Parents, Carers and Guardians,

We have become aware over the last few days that an increasing number of children in Luggers class are discussing “Momo” or the “Momo challenge”. I have spoken to parents, and so has Mrs Legg, but the interest from children does not seem to be dying down.

For this reason I am writing to all parents of children in Luggers class to ask you to be vigilant, increase supervision of your child’s online activity and be prepared to have a full and frank conversation with your child about this if s/he is involved in it at all.

What is “Momo”? The image associated with “Momo”is disturbing in itself, particularly to younger and more imaginative children and adults. It is age-inappropriate - it is a “game” that encourages people to use social media, namely WhatsApp, to befriend “Momo”, who will then set them challenges. Finally, these challenges become increasingly dangerous rather than simply bizarre and are reported to include a challenge to harm yourself.

We are talking to individuals in the class on a case by case basis, but we really need your support to stop children accessing this “game”. They are not able to access it in school, but it is possible that they can search and find images of the character of “Momo”, which can be upsetting in itself. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
