ISSG grounds helicopter after Leicester crash

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has grounded its helicopter service in the wake of the crash in Leicester at the weekend.

The AugustaWestland AW169 helicopter used by the company is the same kind as the one that crashed outside Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium on Saturday evening, killing the Club's chairman and four others.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is leading an investigation, which is expected to take several days.

Island Helicopters was due to take a break for the winter from this Saturday (November 3rd).

A spokesman for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company told Radio Scilly: “The safety of our passengers is our highest priority and following the helicopter accident at Leicester City Stadium we have decided not to operate Island Helicopters until we receive information from the authorities as to the cause of the accident.

"Passengers affected are being offered a full refund or transfer to our Skybus fixed wing service or Scillonian passenger ferry.”
