Hell Bay Hotel 'to be exclusively for grown-ups'

Hell Bay Hotel has announced that it will no longer take children under 14 from next year.

General Manager Philip Callan said that the award-winning venue will become a “haven for adults and young adults aged over 14 - a space to relax, refresh and escape”.

He wrote on social media: “Over recent years the other accommodation on Bryher - and indeed our own accommodation on neighbouring Tresco - have grown such a strong family offering that we have found the market for young children at Hell Bay has reduced year on year.”

Families with younger children will still be welcome to enjoy the grounds and bar during the day, but the hotel’s accommodation and facilities will be increasingly aimed at “creating the islands’ ultimate boutique grown up retreat”.

Hell Bay will start the process with the introduction of a new yoga studio and a revitalised swimming pool garden in which to enjoy peace and relaxation.

However, the news did not go down well with many commenters on Facebook.

One wrote: “As a mum of a 2 year old who's stayed multiple times at Hell Bay before having children, I'm very sad to hear for the next 12 years I can't come back unless it's alone. Love you and Bryher, but this isn't a great idea.”

Another said: “Very bad decision limiting young families with children who want to stay in a great hotel on the best island in the world... sad news indeed that you feel you have to limit an entire age group of families but still allow dogs over small children.”

The response wasn’t all negative. A further commenter wrote: “As a parent of twin 15 yr olds... its' a great idea. They want to interact with us and be treated more as adults, but alas many accommodations can't cater for every age range, or activities ... Looks like Hell Bay is leading the way.”
