Scilly holds first Emergency Services Day
Yesterday's first ever Scilly Emergency Services Day has been described as "very successful".
Emergency Services Day, also known as 999 Day, is a new national event honouring the work of the emergency services.
The inaugural celebration started at 9am on the ninth day of the ninth month.
The Council's Senior Manager for Infrastructure Craig Dryden said: "Here on Scilly, we were represented by the South West Ambulance Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Police, HM Coastguard and the RNLI. We had a couple of live demonstrations. One was with the fire service and South West Ambulance working together. It was a road traffic accident scenario, to get a casualty out of the car. We saw the fire crew cut the roof of the car off. It created quite a nice little convertible!
"The Coastguard also did a demo - an inshore rescue of a casualty. It was a quick demonstration but very effective and shows absolutely the worth of the Coastguard."
Craig said he was pleased with how the event on Holgate's Green turned out, describing it as "very successful".
"This was our first time doing this, to see how it panned out. I must say it was a much bigger crowd than I was anticipating given how great the weather was. It’s been a brilliant event and next year, we can plan ahead a little bit more and hopefully it’ll be even bigger. I think we’ll actually try to get a much more multi-agency approach, get the Lifeboat working with the Coastguard and the Police. We’ll have a bit more planning and a few more demonstrations."
