Plymouth Argyle coaches return to train Scilly kids

Football coaches from Plymouth Argyle visited Scilly earlier this month to deliver coaching to children from across the islands.

Six coaches provided three days of training on August 20th, 21st and 22nd to children between the ages of 4 and 16.

The event, organised by the Five Islands Football Club, followed a slightly different format than in previous years, with the first day being used for several "taster" sessions, such as Girls only, Soccer Tots (4-6 year olds), Strikers and Goalies and Train like a Pro (a taster of an Academy session).

Organiser Alison Stedeford said the taster sessions were “highly successful in attracting many children who don't already play regularly with the Five Islands Football Club”.

The next two days followed the more traditional format of a Soccer School with 60 children from across the islands attending, nearly a third of whom were girls who had been inspired from the first day's session.

"The six coaches and children worked extremely hard over the three days and displayed great enthusiasm and eagerness to try new things," said Alison.

Their visit was part of Plymouth Argyle's Football in the Community project, which aims to promote grass roots football at all levels.

Alison added that the Five Islands Football Club are very grateful to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group and Rotary Club for their support with the event and "hope it will continue for years to come".
