11-year old islands girl to row for Maiden Factor

An 11-year-old Scillonian girl will attempt a sponsored row between Samson and St Mary's this weekend in aid of The Maiden Factor.

Hallie Shave was inspired to raise money after a team from The Maiden Factor Foundation visited Five Islands School in July to talk about the cause, which supports girls' education.

The not-for-profit organisation was founded by Tracy Edwards MBE, who skippered the iconic yacht Maiden and her all-female crew to second in their class in the 1989-90 Whitbread round the world race.

After an extensive year-long restoration in 2017, the 58ft Maiden re-entered the water on August 6th and is now being readied for a three-year world tour 27 years after her original success. Starting on September 22nd, the tour - which has 30 stops in 18 countries - will raise awareness of and support charities who seek to give girls the "basic human right" of education.

Hallie's mum Sarah Shave said: "This is something she wants to do. We think it’s amazing. I’m sure it will be the first of many amazing things our girl will achieve. She is related to the Webber family from Samson, which is why she wants to row from there."

Of her preparation, Sarah added: "She's been practising from our yacht whilst we've been at anchor and rowed back to the Quay after days out from the off-islands."

Hallie is hoping to row the more than 1.3 miles from Samson to St Mary's on Saturday afternoon at around 3pm. The forecast is for light cloud and a moderate breeze.
