Time running out to vote for Health Centre to win award
There are only four days left to vote for St Mary's Health Centre to win Surgery of the Year at the General Practice Awards 2018.
The surgery is up for the People's Choice Award but faces 79 other practices across the UK.
Scilly GP Dr Chris Picken urged islanders to help St Mary's win the accolade, telling This is Scilly that every vote counts.
He said: "I think it's fair to say that we are the only surgery in England, probably in the UK, to provide 24/7 care day in, day out. We provide some enhanced services that don't happen anywhere else, all our emergency services, working with the ambulance service and the hospital. You can look at our waiting lists, our access, our patient satisfaction. I think they're probably second to none!"
The health centre staff have also been fundraising in the last year, raising money for Cornwall Air Ambulance with a parachute jump, quiz night, bake sales, book sales, jumble sales and "anything else that comes along".
Dr Picken added: "I think, certainly in terms of where I've been before, that we're the most integrated practice in the community. We're working with the Council doing the Sustainability Transformation Plan, we've just got lots of extra, unpaid, goodwill work and it's reciprocated in most of the community as well.
"You can either vote online or by text. There are another 79 surgeries up for the award so every vote counts, especially given the size of us! It's a recognition of the practice but I think that's completely representative of what the population is like. We can't do it without the patients and hopefully our patients can't do it without us. The community support is fantastic. So we're very lucky."
Voting closes on Friday August 17th, after which three surgeries will be shortlisted and invited to attend the awards ceremony on November 30th.
