A new tour company has started up on St Mary's, offering a "bite-sized" introduction to Scilly.
Zoe Parry and Abigail Wrigley of The Scilly Tour Company give hour-long guided tours twice a day from Hugh Town.
Zoe told This is Scilly of the new venture: "The Scilly Tour Company came about from my time with the Islands' Partnership when I helped on the quay with the cruise ships, and also my time at the Star Castle. I noticed that there was a gap in the market for people offering one-hour, bite-sized introductions to Scilly.
"Very often sometimes the cruise ship passengers will come off the ship and don't venture any further than the end of Hugh Town so it's great just to be able to take them on a short tour. It consists of entering via the Sally Port and stopping outside Hugh House, the batteries, the powder room and finishing up at the Star Castle Hotel."
She added: "It's a tour about everything. We do a little bit of history obviously because of the nature of where we are, but what's really interesting to people is the social history and how we live here on the islands. The questions we often get asked are about education, water, resilience, and the lifeboat's a very popular question as well. So it's just about giving a little overview and some great photographic opportunities."
The tours set off at 10.30 from the Tourist Information Centre on Porthcressa and at 12.15 from St Mary’s Quay.
"We try to coincide with Scillonian day trip passengers, as this is for people who are perhaps short on time and haven't been to Scilly before so it's a perfect welcome," said Zoe.
Tours cost £5 per person, with children of 15 or under free of charge. Booking is not necessary. Anyone interested in a tour is invited to simply turn up at the appropriate time, looking out for the red caps.
