Council apologises for Council Tax issues

The Council of the Isles of Scilly has apologised after residents complained they could not pay their Council Tax via the telephone number provided.  

 

Some islanders also received a letter saying they owed Council Tax, despite having previously filled out a Direct Debit form.

 

One St Mary's resident wrote on Facebook: "COUNCIL TAX - Anyone else had similar problems??? I have had a letter saying I owe 2 months and the 3rd month is due on 16th June. IF I DON'T PAY IN 7 DAYS I WILL LOSE THE RIGHT TO PAY BY INSTALMENTS. But I filled in the forms months ago and sent them off so I have no idea what is going on. I phoned 0300 1234 105 then 1 then 2 as advised for council tax, and was cut off TWICE. I phoned 3 instead and got a lovely lady called Claire from Cornwall I presume who tried to get through for me with no luck. She has sent them a message asking them to phone me - nothing so far."

 

The post was followed by 44 comments from fellow islanders, many saying they had had the same experience. 

 

The problems are the latest in a series of admin and finance issues following the transfer of the Council of the Isles of Scilly's finance and IT functions to Cornwall Council.

"It has come to the Council’s attention that the automated phone line provided by Cornwall Council for Council Tax purposes for the residents of the Isles of Scilly was not working. This has now been fixed. We apologise for the inconvenience this issue has caused.

 

There have also been some issues raised concerning Council Tax reminder letters, which some residents have received this week. There has been some feedback that residents have completed a Direct Debit form and subsequently received a letter informing them that their payment is outstanding. There is currently no Direct Debit form to pay for Council tax. The only way to set up a Direct Debit payment for Council Tax is by phoning 0300 1234 105 during normal office hours (Monday to Friday between 9 am and 4.30 pm).  

 

Direct Debit forms only currently exist for Water and Sewerage charges. Residents may therefore have completed this form and think that they have dealt with both Council Tax and Water and Sewerage charges. If you have completed a Direct Debit form it will only be for Water and Sewerage charges and you will need to phone 0300 1234 105 to set up a Direct Debit for Council Tax. We are currently working on an electronic Council Tax Direct Debit form for the Council’s website."
