24-hour gaming marathon to raise money for charity

Two St Mary's Airport employees will compete in a 24-hour gaming marathon this weekend to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Chief Passenger Handler Douglas Burrow and Air Traffic Controller Nic Davidson will play together or against each other in a variety of games on Sunday June 17th.

The loser will have their back waxed at a time and date to be confirmed.

During pub opening hours, the marathon will be held at the Scillonian Club, where onlookers can join in and play Nic or Douglas for a donation. There will also be a raffle.

Douglas (above left) said: "Unable to physically run a marathon for cancer (as we're very unfit) we have decided to do the next best thing and the closest we may ever come to sporting glory.

"I have always liked to fundraise and play computer games from a very young age. My first Console was an Atari 2600 (the one where you have to slot the games into the top). Pac-man and Pong were the first ever games I played, which then progressed to Doom and Sensible Soccer, and finally to the up-to-date games that we play now, including virtual reality.

"I have arranged lots of events ranging from race nights, bowling nights, quiz nights etc, but this is first off this type I have ever tried. Nic's first computer game was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was for his third birthday present and since then has always had a passion for gaming!"

On their decision to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, he said: "So many people have been affected by cancer whether it is directly or indirectly and with Macmillan’s support they continue to live their life fully. Just being able to raise some money for this great cause is reason enough."

The event will be an international affair as Nic (aka Nic-The-Great-) is representing South Africa and Douglas (aka Abixia) is representing Great Britain.

The Programme:-

00:00 - 08:00 Resident Evil 5 Co-op

08:00 - 10:00 Fifa 18 - Versus

10:00 - 12:00 Rocket League - Versus

12:00 - 14:00 W2k16 - Versus

18:00 - 20:00 Fifa 18 - Versus

20:00 - 22:00 Mortal Combat X - Versus

22:00 - 24:00 Rocket League – Versus

Douglas, who said on Tuesday that his "thumbs are in the best shape they've ever been", added: "Throughout the 24 hours we will be keeping tally of the score on white boards and the overall loser will have their back waxed at a time and date to be confirmed. We are as yet unsure whether we will charge a fiver a strip to raise more money for Macmillan.

"Both Nic and I have done long gaming sessions before, but nothing as long as 24 hours. Being the first time either of us has done anything like this is going to make it interesting as we are not really sure how it will play out. We believe this is the first of this type of fundraising event tried on the islands.

"Please help us to raise a lot of money for this fantastic cause and make this one off event a success."

The gaming marathon will be streamed live on the internet at for the whole 24 hours.
