More success for Isles of Scilly Judo Club

The Isles of Scilly Judo Club came home with 17 medals after the recent Cornish judo Championships.

Some 24 islands children took part in the event in Redruth on May 20th, which saw a total of 120 entries.

Instructor Faye Guy told This is Scilly: "For some children this was their first time away from home and first competition. You can imagine how massive this was for them.

"There was some very good judo displayed across the mats and some stiff competition. Some children were fighting in large categories and were up against some older and more skilled judona. The Scilly children were so supportive of each other with cheering, kind words and hugs where needed. Anyone who has the guts to get up and fight deserves a medal."

The Club is back in Redruth for the Judo Closed Team Championships on June 9th, with an area grading the following day.

The Isles of Scilly Judo Club, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in September, trains in the school performance hall, where its practice area is the size of one competition mat.

It is one of the largest clubs on the islands, with a waiting list for members. Despite Scilly's small population, it has the largest children's judo membership in the South West.
