Scilly's Barclays Bank to close in October

Barclays Bank on the Isles of Scilly has told customers it is to close on October 18th.

Account holders were informed by letter that the decision to close "is never an easy one" but that "customers are increasingly using other ways to do their everyday banking".

An explanation of the closure on the Barclays website states that the number of counter transactions has gone down in the last two years, while 73% of branch customers also use other methods of banking such as online and telephone.

The website also says that "only 62 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking".

It went on to outline how the St Mary's branch is used (see below):

The branch, located on Hugh Street, has experienced staffing issues for an extended period, sometimes resulting in temporary closure.

The letter to customers went on to say that the bank will continue to support them and the community before and after the closure, adding: "Over the coming weeks we will be speaking with our customers and contacting members of the local community to understand the concerns they may have when the branch closes."
