Steamship Group responds to MP's comments

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has responded after the islands' MP Derek Thomas called for it to focus on ensuring that the operation of its lifeline shipping services improves.

Representatives of the company met with Transport Minister Nusrat Ghani last month after concerns about freight and passenger services to the islands were expressed by Scillonians, visitors and Derek himself.

Isles of Scilly Steamship Group chairman Andrew May said: “It is extraordinary and deeply disappointing that the MP for St Ives has chosen to publish and promote via a press release his selective interpretation of a private meeting he arranged between our company and a Minister of State, and even more extraordinary that his office appears to have issued to the media personal correspondence addressed to me from the Minister, which he was copied in to.

"I am writing to Mr Thomas to seek an urgent explanation as to why he has done this, and why now."

After the meeting, which took place on April 18th, Ghani sent the Steamship Group a letter asking for detailed plans and timescales for a replacement passenger vessel, contingency plans in case Scillonian III is out of service, clarification of the status of the Mali Rose and several other aspects of the business.
