Max Berryman, 21, was on a trawler on Sunday morning when what is believed to be a Porbeagle shark bit him on the leg after it was hauled on to the boat's deck via its nets.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: "The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Newquay was sent to airlift a crewman from a fishing vessel suffering from shark bites - possibly a Porbeagle shark - that was brought on deck on the vessel’s nets."

The crew of the trawler - named as the Govenek of Ladram from Newlyn - sterilised and dressed the leg wounds, one of which is reported to have been 10 inches long. They then contacted the Coastguard asking for medical assistance.

The fisherman is believed to be recovering in hospital. Meanwhile, HM Coastguard praised the actions of the crew following the incident.
