Macmillan Cancer Support will be on Scilly next week offering free information, advice and support for local people affected by cancer.
The charity and The Cove Macmillan Support Centre will run drop-in sessions on St Mary's on Wednesday May 9th and Thursday May 10th.
The sessions will take place at St Mary’s Health Centre (Wednesday 11am-2pm), Healthwatch office on Porthcressa Square (Wednesday 4pm–6:30pm); and the Old Wesleyan Chapel (Thursday 10am–4pm).
Anyone worried about cancer is welcome to drop in, with both The Cove and Macmillan mobile teams on hand to help with issues such as the signs and symptoms of cancer, side effects of treatment, emotional and psychological impact, benefits advice and support for carers.
Elaine Perry, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Specialist, said “We are looking forward to returning to the Isles of Scilly on the 9th and 10th of May to support local people living with cancer. Our friendly and knowledgeable teams will be there to answer any questions people may have, whether that’s about their treatment, side effects they might be experiencing or practical issues such as help with welfare benefits and finances.”
Kathryn Radcliffe, Macmillan Cancer Centre Manager at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, added: “I’m looking forward to supporting people and telling them about all the help available to them from both The Cove and Macmillan Cancer Support.
"Despite being based on the mainland, we offer one-to-one sessions by phone so that people can always call us and get support when they need it, even if they are unable to travel to the centre itself. There is also the Macmillan Support Line and online community too that can be a great source of support to anyone facing a difficult time.”
The team will be accompanied by Di Charlton, Macmillan’s Engagement Lead for the region, and Anna Burton of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Patient and Carer Group. Di and Anna will be meeting with and listening to the views of local residents and key stakeholders about the support and services available to people affected by cancer on the island, and exploring areas for improvement.
The Cove Macmillan Support Centre is run by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and supports anyone affected by cancer living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It is located at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3LJ. It is open Mon to Fri 9:30am–4:30pm.
