Extra police on duty for Gig Weekend

May 1, 2018

"A lot more" extra police officers than last year will be deployed on the islands for the World Pilot Gig Championships this weekend.

Sgt Hopkins told This is Scilly that there will be two Sergeants and at least three or four extra PCs to deal with the increased numbers.

One Sergeant will be in charge of operations on the ground, while Sgt Hopkins himself will run the police custody suite.

He said: "From what I'm told, last year there weren't enough police to potentially deal with the incidents we did have. There's nothing to suggest that there will be any more trouble than previous years but there are three cruise ships coming in too so we're expecting more people than normal.

"It's really a precautionary step to make sure we can deal efficiently with any issues that do arise."

A record 158 gigs are expected to take part in the 29th World Pilot Gig Championships this weekend.

St Agnes Gig Club is running a weather sweepstake ahead of the event.
