New Air Ambulance heli 'will make huge difference'

A Cornwall Air Ambulance Paramedic who is a regular visitor to Scilly has said a new helicopter will make a "huge difference" to the islands.

The charity has started an appeal to raise £2.5 million to bring a next generation helicopter to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by April 1, 2020. It describes the helicopter as a "medically advanced, faster, better equipped aircraft that will save more time and more lives for the next 20 years".

Paramedic Stu Croft, who married on St Mary's in 2015, told This is Scilly: "As someone who has worked on the islands and responded to critical patients there I am personally over the moon to be getting a faster more powerful aircraft that will help us get to patients even more quickly than we can now.

"The Isles of Scilly can only benefit from this as the Air Ambulance will be able to respond in a quicker time and we will be able to cover greater distances at a speed of 145knots. In a remote location when every second counts it is going to make a huge difference. I hope everyone will get behind the appeal ... it’s awesome for us all!"

TV stars and authors Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have agreed to become New Heli Appeal ambassadors.

The Air Ambulance flew 41 missions to the Isles of Scilly last year. These were among a total of 869 missions for 2017, the highest number in more than five years.
