Penzance heliport petition reaches 10,000 signatures

A petition supporting a new heliport in Penzance has now attracted more than 10,000 signatures.

The petition, started in May 2017, calls for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group to 'cease their attempts to prevent a new helicopter service from Penzance'.

Islander Sam Mallon started the petition following news that the ISSG has begun proceedings for a judicial review of the planning permission for the project.

The judicial review has now been been dropped after Penzance Heliport Ltd agreed with Cornwall Council that it would submit an amended planning application.

The petition reads: "We, the residents, visitors and friends of the Isles of Scilly, object to the actions of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group in seeking to deny us a helicopter service from Penzance.

"Penzance is the only logical site as it suffers less from low cloud and fog than Land's End, is close to transport links and has existing tourist facilities.

"We demand that the Directors of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group put islanders first and cease their attempts to prevent a new helicopter service from Penzance."

At the time of writing, the petition has 10,077 signatures.

Steamship Group chairman Andrew May recently said that the company's door remains open for a discussion with Penzance Heliport Ltd about a possible helicopter service from Land's End.
