Five Islands Ofsted report 'recognises progress'

Five Islands School has received a monitoring report following an Ofsted inspection last month.

The full report of the visit from three inspectors on November 14th-15th will be available on December 13th.

A letter to parents and carers from Interim Executive Board chair Jackie Eason, Executive Principal Sara Davey and Head of School Jo Yeates said it was "reassuring" that Ofsted has recognised the progress being made.

The report's main findings were that 'Leaders and managers are taking effective action towards the removal of special measures; the local authority’s statement of action is fit for purpose; and the school’s improvement plan is fit for purpose.

The letter read: "Of course we know there is a long way to travel before we are once again outstanding, but it was reassuring to receive external validation that we are travelling in the right direction. The inspectors made particular mention of the impact of work in the secondary phase, particularly in curriculum design and teaching, learning and assessment. Ofsted observed that: 'The work being done by the new senior leaders responsible for achievement and for quality of teaching is an emerging strength.'

"The IEB are delighted with the positive impact Jo Yeates has had on both supporting staff and driving school improvement and are pleased to announce that she will continue in her role for a further academic year, until August 2019. Ofsted commented: “The acting headteacher has the support of many members of staff and the wider community. Expectations of teachers and pupils have risen, and all can see the benefit of the changes being made.'"

The letter said that Five Islands School is expected to convert to a Sponsored Academy on March 1st 2018. It will then be part of the LEAP multi academy trust (MAT) along with Mounts Bay (confirmed) and proposed additional partners Ludgvan, St Hilary and St Buryan Academies.

It was agreed at a recent meeting that the school will trial an 8.45am start (8.50am on Mondays) and 3.15pm finish between January and Easter.
