Scilly's Colossus shipwreck no longer at risk

The wreck of the 18th-century 74-gun warship, which went down off Samson in 1798, was added to the list last year.

The register, updated every year, identifies those sites that are most at risk of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

The wreck is no longer at immediate risk following a campaign by Historic England and other enforcement agencies to raise awareness of it. However, it remains protected.

'Pioneering' stabilisation work to the seabed was also carried out to help preserve the site.

Historic England has commissioned a virtual wreck discovery trail for HMS Colossus, mirroring the underwater dive trail that was created in 2009.

There are 34 sites on the Isles of Scilly on the 2017 Heritage at Risk Register, which was published earlier this week.
