Sailing Club holds 30th Round the Island Race

The Scillonian Sailing Club's 30th Round the Island Race took place last Sunday, with Keith and Ned Buchanan first to finish in the Redwing 'Shag'.

The 33 boats provided a colourful spectacle as they raced from just off the Bacon Buoy in St Mary's harbour clockwise around the island to St Agnes.

'A warm sun, a fresh breeze and turbulent seas made the 30th Round the Island race one to remember. After an unsettled week and poor forecast, few expected blue skies and warm breeze. 33 yachts, dinghies and catamarans headed east, downwind from Bacon Buoy to Bar Point. Three Redwings and the Laser fun headed inshore, whilst the Laser 2000, a Hobie and wayfarers tried further offshore in the now ebbing tide. Two Hawks, spinnakers set, down the middle.

Around Bar, close inshore, Redwing ‘Shag’ with a narrow lead, the 2000, Redwings ‘Spirit’ and ‘Fantastic’ and Hobie 15, all in contention as they hardened sails onto the wind. A vicious gust hit, capsizing the 2000, propelling the Hobie through to a good lead on the reach. Wind against tide increased the wind and sea state from Hats to Peninnis, making for exciting, testing conditions. Groups that had long tacked to the East converging with those who’d tacked inshore.

The Redwings, enjoying the rough going, showed well at the finish. Redwing ‘Shag’ Keith and Ned buchanan first to finish followed by Ben and Toby Hicks in ‘Spirit’ then Richard and Amelia Mills in Hobie 15. The two ‘Hawks’ Tim Hicks just leading Alan Davis. Redwings ‘Fantastic’ James Fletcher and Kylie Carter ahead of Mark Underwood and and Luke Humphries in ‘Althea’ and Sam Stephan and Archie Hicks in ‘Duke’. Jack and Jessie in the Laser Fun and Phillip Callan in the second Hobie.

Three boats crossed together, Carol Shave and Honor Burrows in ‘Venus’, Keith and Jono Grossett in ‘Ballerina’, and Jessie and James in the ‘Beaufort’. Throughout the fleet there was close racing, some small breakages, a few capsizes and several early retirements.

St Agnes laid on a warm welcome, plenty of sun, lazy pints, pasties and burgers. A large crowd, swelled by the St Agnes Fete enjoyed great music from The Pie Trio.'
