10 boats race in annual Tresco Tack

The Scillonian Sailing Club held its annual 'Tresco Tack' on Sunday, with ten boats vying to be first to reach Tresco quay.

The competitors started from the quay on St Mary's and headed to Crow Rock, around Nut Rock and into Tresco for the finish.

Predictions of fog did not materialise, leaving a light westerly, with slight swell and excellent visibility.

Carol Shave and Zoe Jenkins in Redwing Venus took advantage of the subtle port end start line bias and had pulled out a 20-yard lead by the Bacon mark. They were followed by Ben and Toby Hicks in Spirit, Mark Underwood and Luke Humphries in Althea, Dave and Ahab Mawer in the 2K, and Ian Sibley and Fran Clark in Seagull.

Race officer Keith Buchanan wrote in his report: "The breeze, stronger offshore, tempted half the fleet out into the foul tide. Those inshore lost out as the wind died. Alan and Glenis Davis in the Hawk powered through the fleet spinnaker set.

"By the Crow the fleet had bunched, with Seagull, the 2K and Hawk rounding close together. Once round the fleet again split, half going up the Tresco shore, others tacking back to St. Mary's."

Ian and Fran, first to Nut, held their lead to finish first, just ahead of Dave and Ahab. Mark and Luke came in third, ahead of Carol and Zoe.

The fleet moored up and enjoyed lunch, refreshments and sun at the New Inn, before a gentle sail home.

The Club's annual Round the Island race takes place on July 30th at 10.30am.
