A new eatery has opened on St Mary's on the site of what used to be Tolman Cafe.
Coastal View Kitchen in Old Town is run by former Mermaid Inn head chef Cameron Kirkpatrick (above) and fellow chef Bobby Carr.
Cam, who was brought up in Newquay but has travelled extensively, told This is Scilly News: "We have a vegetarian and fish-based menu with meat specials. We're trying to reverse what other places do, where usually the vegetarian options are the extras. It's all home cooked and sourced in Cornwall and the South West. Hopefully it'll be tasty!"
Cam and Bobby took on the cafe just three weeks ago after Mermaid barman Charlie Flores informed Cam that it was available. Since then it's been 15-hour days to prepare for today's opening, with help from front of house staff Charlie and Verity.
They didn't have time to do much to the decor. "We just wanted to brighten it up," said Cam. "It was quite dark and there were lots of pictures everywhere. It looked a bit like Elton John's spare room!"
He said he feels "good" about the opening and "not nervous", although he added: "I might be if things start going wrong!
"It's good that my business partner is Bobby Carr. We're both chefs, so we can help each other out."
He said of the menu: "In the daytime we'll be doing crab sandwiches, toasties, salads etc, as well as bulgur wheat, fish, lobster and things like that. We will have cakes too but we'll get more and more as the season progresses.
"The menu is an ongoing process. Part of the reason I'm looking forward to this is that we're not restricted in what we cook by owners who don't cook themselves. So we're looking forward to being creative."
Future plans include turning the rear of the cafe, which was previously an animal sanctuary, back into a garden - although previous leasee Adam Smith left them with a pheasant, three geese, two parrots and 13 chickens.
Cam added: "We'll potentially grow our own veg so we can do plough to plate."
Coastal View Kitchen is open from 5pm today, with meat specials duck and lamb shank.
It is then open every day from tomorrow until the end of October between 11am and 10pm.
