There are just six days left to vote for a local man to win the prestigious title of ‘Shellfish Fisherman of the Year 2016’.
Mark Pender from Bryher has been shortlisted for the accolade, which is part of an industry-led awards scheme managed and run by Fishing News magazine.
The scheme aims to 'shine a spotlight on the achievements, expertise and innovation in the UKs commercial fishing industry'.
Mark, skipper for Island Fish Ltd, was shortlisted both because of his low impact method of fishing that has a high value-added return without working large amounts of gear but also because of his work at Chair of the Isles of Scilly Fisherman’s Association and the work that has taken place with the IOS IFCA to develop a two-year programme of research and monitoring of the local Crawfish population, a measure that is currently supported by all island based fisherman.
The final results of this study will provide scientists with an unprecedented level of information about a species that has seen a significant decline in numbers nationwide.
Mark said of his nomination: "I’m absolutely delighted to have been shortlisting for this award, ensuring that the islands fishery is sustainable for the next generation of island fisherman is something that means a lot to me -to be recognised for this means a huge amount."
The awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Rory Bremner, will be held in Aberdeen on May 25.
