School hostel receives 1 hygiene rating

The Five Islands School hostel Mundesley House has received a 1 Food Standards Agency rating following a recent inspection by the Local Authority.

A visit on February 8 found that the boarding facility's management of food safety required "major improvement".

Food safety includes the "systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future".

Improvement was also considered necessary in the area of hygienic food handling, incorporating preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

The general cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building was also rated as 'improvement necessary'.

Phil Roe, who sits on the school's Interim Executive Board, said: "We're up to date with the issues at Mundesley and it's in hand."

He also revealed that the Boarding Schools' Association will be advising on the development of Mundesley House.

The Council's Environmental Health Officer David Currie said of the FSA rating: "I can confirm that a subsequent revisit has been carried out and all matters have been satisfactorily addressed."

The FSA gives ratings of 0 - 5.
