Adjudicator praises Academy over music festival

A prominent musician has praised Five Islands Academy for sending pupils to the annual Cornwall Music Festival.

Liz Childs, a woodwind player and teacher who adjudicates at festivals around the world, said she had never before seen a school take their pupils "away for a few days to participate in a music festival".

She is quoted in the Academy's newsletter as telling woodwind teacher Jane Pender: “I just wanted to say how lovely it was to have you and all your pupils at the music festival. I was so touched by the way you as a school embraced the whole mission, experience and a massive thumbs up to your school management team for having the vision and understanding to know and recognise that allowing your pupils to participate in such a way is just such a valuable educational experience.

"In all the years that I have been adjudicating I have never come across a school that takes their pupils away for a few days to participate in a music festival. It should be ‘modelled’ as it’s absolutely brilliant. I just felt that the approach was so refreshing in this day and age."

Liz added: "Your pupils were an absolute joy to be around and were such a credit to you and your school.”

A total of 11 students from Five Islands Academy aged between 9 and 14 attended the annual event at Truro Methodist Church. They took home five trophies and were placed in all categories.
