Scilly pals nervous for London Marathon

Two Scilly friends running in the London Marathon have said they are excited but extremely nervous ahead of Sunday’s race.

Bec and Leanne after taking part in the London Winter Run in February

Bec Campion and Leanne Gibbons entered the ballot after becoming inspired watching their friends run in last year’s event, but only Leanne was given a place.

Bec was determined to find a charity spot and wanted something in the area of mental health due to her own struggles. She opted for United Response, who provide a range of services for adults and young people with learning disabilities, autism, mental health needs or physical disabilities.

She said: “Leanne and I have run together for over a year and have a similar pace, which is great for training. However, after I moved from Scilly to Carbis Bay in January we haven’t been able to do that much together. Not so good for the motivation but we have been chatting to each other daily and being as encouraging as we can over messages/phone/video chat.

“I’ve definitely found training on my own a lot harder than I thought, especially with the bad weather we had and trying to find new routes without getting lost! I know I haven’t trained as much as I should have but we will get each other across that finish line, even if we have to walk or crawl!”

The pair thanked their friends and family for their support, particularly Liz Osborne for allowing them to hold a fundraiser at the Kavorna in March.

Bec said that she and Leanne are extremely nervous but excited for what is sure to be an amazing day.

She added: “The support and tips from those who have done it before have been invaluable. The main thing everyone said was that the experience starts at the expo and to make sure you enjoy it and take it all in.”

If anyone would like to track Bec and Leanne on the London Marathon App, their bib numbers are 3951 (Leanne) and 41512 (Bec). Any donations can be posted on their fundraising page and there is a collection pot in the Co-op.
