Pz Heliport project 'at an exciting stage'

Penzance Heliport Ltd has said the project is now at a "really exciting stage”.

The helicopter service linking Penzance and the islands is expected to launch in spring 2020.

The company's Head of Marketing Tom Matthews told Radio Scilly: "We’re looking to start the main build in April. We’ve been sort of quiet for the last couple of months and that’s because quite frankly unless you’re fascinated by highly technical planning conditions, there hasn’t been huge amounts to say.

"We’ve been really busy behind the scenes. We had 42 pre-construction planning conditions that we had to adhere to and provide evidence of to Cornwall Council. Now we’re at that really exciting stage that when you drive past the site at Jelbert Way you can start really seeing activity. We’re starting to see diggers on site preparing the ground.

"It’s been a very long and at times very frustrating few years trying to get the planning application through but we can now actually start and things are starting to happen on site. By spring 2020 we should have helicopters flying between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly once again, which is what everyone’s missed for the last seven years."

Tom also explained that work will soon start on Tresco heliport, which has been "effectively mothballed over the last six or seven years".

"It’s been used as all sorts of things including a yoga studio so the building has been maintained and upkept but now we’re at the exciting point where we can start turning it back into a fully operational heliport again."

He added: "It’s a big project but we’re confident we can achieve it by spring 2020. People have been waiting long enough for this to come to fruition so we can’t wait to get on with it."
