Crime thrillers set on Scilly get TV pilot

A series of crime thrillers set on the Isles of Scilly have been optioned for TV.

A short pilot based on Kate Rhodes' books Hell Bay, Ruin Beach and Burnt Island will be filmed on location in winter 2019.

The books feature protagonist DI Ben Kitto, who returns home to Bryher after 10 years on the murder squad in London when a traumatic event leaves him grief stricken. However, his investigative skills are soon needed on the islands.

Kate said: "Last week I got the phone call from a very interesting TV production company called Two Cities so I'm hopeful that they mean business. They've commissioned the first three books for TV. It's a long road between a book getting optioned for TV and actually getting greenlit and put on TV, it can take two or three years, but I think they do mean business because they're planning to make a pilot episode in winter next year."

Newly-formed production company Two Cities Television Ltd produced Patrick Melrose starring Benedict Cumberbatch, while its Creative Director commissioned The Fall and Line of Duty in his previous role as BBC Northern Ireland's Head of Drama.

In Hell Bay, Ben plans to work in his uncle Ray’s boatyard hoping to mend his shattered nerves. However, his plans go awry when the body of a 16-year-old girl is found on the beach at Hell Bay.

In follow-up Ruin Beach, which came out in hardback last month, Ben has become the islands' Deputy Chief of Police. His investigative skills are once again needed when the body of a professional diver is found in Piper's Hole.

Kate, who was on a research trip to the islands last week, is in the process of completing Burnt Island, in which Ben searches for a killer on St Agnes.

Hell Bay and Ruin Beach are available on Amazon.
