Islanders invited to register interest in Car Club

Islanders now have the opportunity to register their interest in a proposed car share scheme on Scilly.

Community group Transition Scilly is hoping to bring an electric pick-up truck to St Mary's for people who do not own a vehicle to hire when needed.

Secretary Andrew Combes posted on the group's Facebook page: "Just a quick note to let you know that the registration page is live on the Co-Cars website. As was discussed back in January this is not a big grant funded project - it will only work if enough people are prepared to pay the annual £25 membership fee.

"So, if you like the idea of being able to hire a little electric pick up truck (deck is the size of a double bed) by the hour (£5) to do the tip or For Sale on Scilly run, then do please visit the website and make your commitment. Don't forget that membership also gives you access to all their mainland vehicles."

Andrew previously assured This is Scilly that the idea is not about bringing more cars to the islands or asking anyone to give up the vehicles they currently own.

He said: "We know that some people need cars for all sorts of reasons. This is about looking at why people keep hold of cars on the islands and seeing if there are any better options out there.

"It is also about giving folk without a vehicle access to one - from time to time something bigger than a wheelbarrow is necessary!"

The Car Club has an annual household membership fee of £25 (two adults), with a hire rate of £5 an hour.

Transition Scilly is initially aiming to secure funds for one vehicle, with the intention of starting small and building something that will sustain in the long-term.

Anyone interested in joining the Car Club is asked to register at https://www.co-cars.co.uk/isles-of-scilly/.

Co-Cars, a 'not for profit Co-operative social enterprise', describes itself as the hire-by-the-hour car club for Exeter and the wider South West.

There are currently 1,253 registered vehicles (DVLA 2014) on St Mary’s, which has approximately 1,800 residents and nine miles of road.
