Academy sponsor found for Five Islands School

A preferred sponsor has been found for the Five Islands School when it converts to Academy status.

A letter to staff and parents from Jackie Eason of the Interim Executive Board revealed that the Office of the Regional Schools Commissioner has recommended Venture Multi Academy Trust as the “sponsor who has shown the best potential to support the school in its immediate situation and work as an effective partner in the future”. It was decided that the school would become an Academy after it was put in special measures following last year’s Ofsted report. Jackie wrote: “In one of our parental consultation meetings someone likened this process to being ‘a marriage for life’ and how could we be sure that we’d found the best partner? To continue this analogy, we’re now entering our ‘courtship’ phase. “Over the coming months members from Venture will visit our school (including the off-island bases) to perform their due diligence. They will be looking very carefully to check that we are the right school for them to sponsor and that they are confident that they will be effective in supporting us. “It is our opportunity to show off our strengths, be honest about our weaknesses and inform Venture of our individual circumstances that we value, such as the off islands bases and Mundesley House.” This first visit will happen next Monday and Tuesday. Acting Headteacher Jeff Marshall said: “As some of you have realised, Venture MAT is a newly-formed multi academy trust. Currently the trust is made up of two ‘outstanding’ schools; firstly Trevithick Learning Academy (Primary) in Camborne and secondly Mounts Bay (Secondary) in Penzance. “The Principals/Headteachers of both of these schools have successful experience of working in school improvement across Cornwall and the South West. Therefore the IEB, and the Senior Team here at the school, are delighted with the proposed academy sponsorship news announced from the Office of the Regional Schools Commissioner.” Lead Member for Children Fran Grottick told This is Scilly: "As has been announced, the Interim Executive Board of the FIS have been pleased to welcome the decision of the Office of the Regional Schools Commissioner that the proposed sponsor Multi Academy Trust for the FIS should be Venture Multi Academy Trust. This Trust has Schools based near Penzance and Falmouth.

"As Lead Member for Children, I also warmly support this prompt decision which will support FIS both now and, as the decision is confirmed, moving forward into the future. "On a personal note, I feel that the choice of a relatively small MAT in a relatively close geographical location will be of added benefit in aiding the communication so pivotal in the current situation."

She added: "I wish everyone involved the very best as FIS contributes it's strengths and seeks support to address its challenges within the supportive framework of a chosen MAT."
